MSc European Rural Development
ERD Residential School, April 2008: analysis of the trans-national cooperation potential in the GAL Monte Linas, Sardinia
A group of rural development students from across Europe were invited by a LEADER area, the GAL Monte Linas, to carry research on trans-national cooperation projects in Sardinia. Working in small teams and with the help of interpreters, students interviewed a wide range of stakeholders including farmers, tourism operators, local craftsmen, food processors and local authorities. Results of the research were presented at a regional conference attended by over 100 people from local businesses, municipalities, and regional bodies including the President of the Province of Medio Campidano, and to local and regional media before leaving. The President of the Local Action Group (LAG) stated that the research results would be utilised to explore ways to ensure more successful implementation of cooperation projects.

From learning to practice
The data revealed problems resulting from the loss of traditional industrial activity including unemployment, out-migration, and difficulties of marketing products. The ERD students also identified gaps in infrastructure and more importantly, a lack of trust between local producers, local authorities and levels of government. The project gave students the opportunity to put learning into practice in a rural area facing significant problems. Research methods, analytical skills and theories of rural development were all applied to explore the issues and propose pragmatic solutions.
