Assessing and developing principles that assist and enable local communities in the delivery of national biodiversity targets
The CCRI secured a research grant of £6,700 from Natural England to work with Gloucestershire farming and Wildlife Advisory Group in identifying the principles that underpin a local delivery initiative. Natural England (NE), a key partner with FWAG in these initiatives, is concerned about the delivery of environmental land management across a landscape to alleviate fragmentation of biodiversity and provide a mosaic for climate change adaptation. As a result NE are interested in the possible contribution that more locally based land management arrangements could make to the delivery of a number of nature conservation policies, as well as other environmental targets.
The project aims to those principles and/or approaches which enable local communities to deliver national targets through a review of the initiative and a series of interviews with some of those involved in one particular community. The main output will be to suggest the most effective parts that would be transferable to other areas and projects and how this might be undertaken. The project, led by Chris Short, is due to report at the end of May 2010.
