Colin has a 1st Class BSc in Botany and Biochemistry and a PhD from Sheffield University. His career in food science and technology spans 45 years, initially as the Head of Mycology and Fruit and Vegetable Sections at the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, including a period of secondment to Matforsk in Norway.

He was appointed Head of the Food Technology Division at Campden BRI in 1981, a position he held for 7 years prior to 21 years as Director-General (CEO). During this period he was also the Unilever Visiting Professor in Food Science at Queen’s University, Belfast.  He is a Fellow and Past President of the U.K’s IFST, a Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science & Technology and Past Chairman of the Scientific Council of International Union of Food Science & Technology.

He has served on many Government and Industry Advisory Committees in the UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore and Abu Dhabi. He is currently the 76th President of US based, Institute of Food Technologists and is the first non American resident to hold this position. He is also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of IFIS and the Scientific Advisory Committee of Flanders Foods (Belgium), is a member of the General Advisory Committee on Science at the UK Food Standards Agency, a Governor at the Royal Agricultural University, a Council Member of the British Nutrition Foundation and is on the Board of the National Skills Academy.

Colin was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to the agri-food industry in 2009, received IFT’s Myron Solberg Award in 2011 for establishing collaboration between industry, academia and government and was selected as one of the Top 100 Scientists by the Science Council in 2014.

Colin has served as Deputy Lieutenant for Gloucestershire since 2005 and is a member of Court of The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire, having served as Warden in 2014-2015.
