Doctoral Training Partnership

ESRC Wales Doctoral Training Partnership

In August, 2016, the ESRC announced its support for a new group of Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP).

The CCRI is delighted to be part of the partnership led by Cardiff University and from October 2017 students in the DTP have benefited from funding and training provided by the Universities that make up the partnership, sharing expertise and experience.

This means that CCRI students in the DTP can benefit from funding as well as training opportunities from a large team of specialist social scientists and the chance to work with the CCRI on practical research.

If you are interested in conducting a postgraduate research degree in the CCRI, please email Dr Matt Reed mreed@glos.ac.uk

This is an exciting development and a recognition of the status of the CCRI as achieving high-level outcomes in research and publications that mean we can support students to a very high level.  We are what the research council describes as ‘a pocket of excellence’ and through the DTP we can build on that strength.

Further information

There is an annual ESRC Wales DTP PhD studentship competition in November when applications for 1+3 and +3 studentships, full time or part-time. In addition, collaborative studentship opportunities may become available and these will be posted on our vacancies page.

Funding

  • ESRC will not normally support any full-time student for more than four years or the part-time equivalent based on the student’s actual time commitment.
  • Successful candidates will normally be expected to commence their PhD on 1 October.
  • Full studentships cover the cost of UK/EU tuition fees, plus a tax-free maintenance grant.

Academic eligibility

Applications are invited from exceptional candidates with a first class or strong upper second-class honours degree, or appropriate Master’s degree. The University values diversity and equality at all levels and encourages applications from all sections of the community. We welcome applications for both full and part-time study, and studentships are available as either ‘1+3’ (i.e. one full time year of research training Masters followed by three years of full-time Doctoral study, or the part-time equivalent), or ‘+3’ (i.e. three years of full-time doctoral study or its part-time equivalent), depending on the needs of the applicant.

Residential eligibility

To be eligible for a full award (stipend and fees), you must:

  • Have settled status in the UK, meaning there are no restrictions on how long you can stay
  • Have been ‘ordinarily resident’ in the UK for three years prior to the start of the studentship grant. This means you must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences)
  • Not have been residing in the UK wholly or mainly for the purpose of full-time education. This does not apply to UK and EU nationals.

To be eligible for a fees-only award, you must:

  • Be ordinarily resident in an EU member state, in the same way as UK students must be ordinarily resident in the UK.

Employment

Full-time ESRC studentship award holders cannot hold either a full-time job or a permanent part-time job, during the period of their award. Part-time ESRC studentship award holders cannot hold a full-time job.
