SmartSOIL developed an interdisciplinary approach, combining scientific insights and understanding of the farming socio-economic context, to identify management practices that can optimise soil carbon storage and crop productivity. The project used modelling and stakeholder consultation to develop the SmartSOIL Toolbox which provides different tools to allow farmers, advisors and policy makers to explore the effects of changing management practices on soil carbon level, crop yields and economics.

SmartSOIL received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme under grant agreement no 289694. It was coordinated by Professor Jørgen E. Olesen from Aarhus University, Denmark, and the CCRI was one of twelve partner organisations working on the project between 2011 to 2015. The final results of SmartSOIL were recently presented at a conference held in Brussels.

More information on SmartSOIL is available on the SmartSOIL website.
